Partial Knee Replacement | Spokane, WA Area Knee Surgeon

Developed in the 1960s, total knee replacement was originally developed as a solution for treating arthritis of the knee, in which the joint's cartilage and underlying bone degenerate over time, becoming painful and dysfunctional. Recently, knee surgeons have developed a less invasive approach for patients with cases of arthritis that are confined to only one compartment of the knee. This solution, known as partial knee resurfacing, is not a solution for everyone; however, candidates of partial knee resurfacing can expect potential benefits including, but not limited to:

Because of the minimally invasive nature of partial knee resurfacing, the procedure can oftentimes be performed on an outpatient basis, allowing the patient to return home the same day of surgery.

Partial Knee Replacement Surgery (PKR)

Also known as unicondylar knee replacement or partial knee replacement, PKR is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that effectively removes the diseased pieces of bone and cartilage from the knee and replaces the damaged compartment with a new implant.

During the procedure, the surgeon will make an incision along the side of the knee, with the cut being anywhere from four to ten inches long. The surgeon will remove the diseased bone and cartilage from the joint and resurface the bone to fit the prosthetic implant. This stands in contrast to a total knee replacement, in which the whole knee joint is replaced with a prosthetic implant. In partial knee replacement, only the damaged part of the knee is removed, preserving as much of the natural bone as possible.

Benefits of Partial Knee Resurfacing Surgery

Knee replacement surgery, whether it is total or partial, allows patients to again perform routine activities, such as walking, getting up from a chair, or gardening without pain. While patients face a period of post-operative recovery to fully rehabilitate the newly operated knee, the general result is a new knee that works and moves like a natural knee, giving patients the freedom to return to their previous activities with significantly less pain.
